It’s Ewan’s fourth year of going cycle touring in the summer holidays. I’ve already been away with Iona for a weekend cycle touring this summer and now I’ve just completed planning Ewan’s.
But this year I didn’t have to plan a route as Ewan and I have been captivated by the new route from Cycling UK – the Cantii Way – so after a Scottish Coast to Coast Cycle tour last year, we’re heading down to the South East to explore an area of the country we’ve never really been to before.
With the route downloaded to Komoot, all I had to do was plan our train travel down there (not easy with train strikes this weekend!) and book campsites, so here’s our plan! We were also able to use the excellent Google Map put together by Max Darkins of facilities along the route.
Ewan’s Cycle Tour Route for 2022
The official start is at Wye, but for us we’re catching the train down to Ashford the night before and found a little campsite just outside of Ashford, so will start our tour from there.
Getting There and Back
We try to keep our trips “low carbon” and so we’re using Avanti trains to take us from Coventry to London, then SouthEastern trains on to Ashford. We have a Friends and Family railcard which saves us a good chunk of the ticket cost. It does create the challenge of having to book bike spaces on Avanti, so I popped into Coventry Station to sort that out as the website wasn’t being helpful, SouthEastern you just jump on board.
Accomodation
We’re camping for the four nights we’re away to keep costs low and to add to the fun, the route is quite well catered for with campsites all costing £20 for the night for the two of us.

- Catch Avanti train from Coventry to Euston then South Eastern to Ashford, Kent.
- Cycle from Ashford to Dunn Street Farm Campsite (Westwell)
- Approx Distance: 5 miles
Day 2: Saturday, 13 August 2022
- Cycle from Westwell to Herne Bay
- Camping at Hampton Bay Park
- Approx Distance: 30 miles
Day 3: Sunday, 14 August 2022
- Cycle from Herne Bay to Kingsdown
- Camping at Kingsdown Camping
- Approx Distance: 38 miles
Day 4: Monday, 15 August 2022
- Cycle from Kingsdown to coast nr. Lydd
- Camping at Orca Campsite
- Approx Distance: 50 miles
Day 5: Tuesday, 16 August 2022
- Cycle from Lydd to Ashford
- Catch train from Ashford back home
- Approx Distance: 27 miles
